Dressed To Kill’ is what we used to believe, but today we need to ‘Dress to Impress’ – not just as an accessory, but as something that defines our personality. As the popular saying goes, ‘Dress How You Want To Be Addressed’, we are more and more accustomed to the concept of ‘power dressing’, not only in our professional field, but also in our social lives.
I will not go into the definition of ‘power dressing’ because we all know what it is. For me, it is choosing the right attire for the right occasion that suits your personality. Your appearance is a direct reflection of who you are. So, dress in a way that conveys YOURSELF.
Every morning, you probably rummage your wardrobe to look for the perfect thing to wear to the office. But you end up wearing the same combination, you choseyesterady or you just give up and pick up something. This time, save the dilemma and your time by knowing some of the simple ways to choose the right corporate attire.
Here are some quick tidbits about how to dress for work:
Western Formals: Generally, many of us prefer to wear western formals to work. But, we tend to get confused about the right combination or type that suits us best. Here are some simple rules to follow.
Shirts: It is better to stick to the classics and go for the bold colours, even pastels and bright hues are should also be a part of the wardrobe. Choose navy blue or burgundy, or mauve, which makes you stand out yet are soothing to the eye. You also need a few striped ones- go for thinner stripes mostly single lines with white or black. You can have a mix of both full-sleeve and half-sleeve shirts. A plain white one is a must.
Apart from formal shirts, you can also opt for formal tops, which goes well with trousers and khakis. Choose the ones which can be tucked in neatly. And, of course, invest in proper blazers and formals jackets. You will need then often.
Trousers: You need to have a few common classic one – black, ash or tinted brown. Striped ones don’t look too formal. Straight cut trousers or khakis work well, but you can also have a few cigarette trousers in stock, but go for single coloured ones.
Skirts: Choose skirts ONLY if you are comfortable with them. Both knee-length and long skirts can be worn, but with the right balance with what you are wearing above. The ones with small slits and side pockets look stylish and formal.
Variety, style and colour can be added with good choices of belts. Formal belts with different styles can really enhance your look and adds to your confidence.
Indian Ethnics: Power dressing doesn’t mean trousers or skirts or formal dresses. Indian ethnic wear like sarees and salwars are also preferred corporate attires. Let us what works and what doesn’t.
Sarees: There are a wide variety of sarees that can be worn to office as long as you are comfortable in them. Make sure you are able to nicely pleat them and avoid very too much of colour or embroidery work. Raw patterns like stripes, blocks, squares, etc. are in fashion these days.
Salwa Suits: Knee-length or full kurtis can be work with churidars. Make sure how you adorn the dupatta as it can enhance or mar your overall appearance. Try to wear simple ones without lot of mirror work or glitters. Cotton kurtis are comfortable and looks formal too. Again, there is a wide range of suits you can choose from, so make a choice according to your preference, style and personality. High neck salwars go well as office wear.
Others: You can also go for fusion like combining a gilet over pants or even palazzos. Palazzos can also be coupled with proper kurtis to give a formal look. You can also wear long ethnic skirts if you have a casual day or some fun event in the office. It adds a casual touch, yet considered proper. Make sure to choose the tops and accessories wisely.
One of the most important thing in power dressing is neatness and cleanliness more than colour combination. A prim and proper attire is always an eye-catcher and makes you look attractive.
